Austral islands (also called Tupua’i islands) are the southernmost group of islands in French Polynesia composed of 7 islands. The weather conditions of Austral islands are quite different from other archipelagos of the region. The coldest season is in June and July where the temperature may drop to 14 or even 11 degrees.
What to see (or What to do)
Although still having a lot of religious sites (called maraes), these islands are more known as the best place in the whole region to see the whales. The season usually starts in the end of August extending till the middle of October.
Tupua’I islands are also well known for their traditional handicraft, the art of making coconut hats and baskets. If you want to choose the best souvenir ever from the Tupua’it it might be surely a hat or a nice basket made with coconut palm leaves.
